At North Dakota State the six-year graduation rate lands at 64%, right around the middle for this list, and that is a whole-campus undergraduate figure rather than a read on this master's. The exercise and nutrition sciences master's runs on campus and is built around research, teaching and grant writing, so what shapes your finish is the research work, not a fixed course count.
Why it is here: Cox College: 'students typically attend face to face classes one day per week'.
Two years, full time, and the master's comes bundled with the dietetic internship rather than sending you out to match for one separately. Cox College says the program is designed to meet the eligibility requirements for the registration examination for dietitians. It won't take you from scratch though. You need a bachelor's and completed didactic dietetics coursework before you can apply, and teaching splits between campus and online.
Why it is here: Lehman: the MS in Nutrition page states no distance format; only the health education certificate is online.
CUNY Lehman College is a public campus in the Bronx with about 13,300 students. As part of the City University of New York, it educates New Yorkers close to home rather than recruiting nationally. Its Department of Health Promotion and Nutrition Sciences runs the M.A. in Health Education and Promotion, a 33-credit degree built for people already working, or planning to work, as health educators in clinical, community and corporate settings.
Why it is here: Saint Elizabeth: the surviving MS in Nutrition is hybrid, and the MS/DI stopped admitting in 2024.
Morristown, New Jersey is home to Saint Elizabeth University, a private nonprofit with fewer than 900 students. Its Department of Foods and Nutrition frames the teaching around science, the liberal arts and ethical leadership, and approaches nutrition holistically. The department is launching a graduate program in entrepreneurial nutrition practice, and it says plainly that the undergraduate nutrition program is under revision and isn't taking new students while that work goes on.
Why it is here: Wayne State: the MS Coordinated Program requires 1032 supervised practice hours on site; the online degree is a different MS.
Wayne State sets a hard clock on completion. You finish the coordinated program within three years of entry or you repeat courses, and the two-year sequence packs in 1,032 hours of supervised practice alongside the coursework. The 58% institutional six-year graduation rate sits below the median for this list, but it counts undergraduates campus-wide, not the fifteen people admitted to a dietetics cohort.
Why it is here: Loma Linda: the coordinated MS carries 1,000 hours of supervised practice on site; the online MS is Plant-Based Nutrition in a different school.
Loma Linda built this master's for people arriving from another field. Any bachelor's subject works, which makes it a realistic route for career changers, and international students are directed here whatever their degree. The prerequisite list is long though: college algebra or higher, human anatomy and physiology with labs, a full year of general chemistry, microbiology, human nutrition and medical terminology. Applications open September 1 and close February 7.
Coordinated program or online master’s: which route fits
Both routes end at the same registration exam, and the choice is not about quality. It is about who arranges the supervised practice and what that arrangement costs you.
A coordinated or internship-attached master’s includes supervised-practice placement. The school holds agreements with hospitals, clinics and agencies; it schedules the rotation and assigns students to sites. This removes the need for a separate internship application, although admission and scheduling may be less flexible. Wayne State’s coordinated master’s runs 1,032 supervised practice hours inside the degree on exactly that model. Cox pairs one day of face-to-face class a week with four days of supervised experiential learning, which is a timetable you organise a life around.
An online master’s delivers coursework at a distance. If it includes supervised practice, rotations still occur in person at approved sites. Programs differ on whether they arrange sites or require students to find preceptors, so confirm placement responsibility, travel distance and weekly hours before enrolling. Why are so few nutrition master’s degrees campus-only?
Because the coursework at this level moves online easily. Medical nutrition therapy, assessment, research methods and program management are analysis rather than production, so a graduate curriculum has little that needs a room. Across the programs indexed on this site, 45 nutrition master's degrees are delivered at a distance against 6 taught on campus, the reverse of the undergraduate picture, where 21 bachelor's degrees stay in a building. What keeps these 6 in one is not the classes. It is the supervised practice.
What is a coordinated program, and why does it have to be in person?
A coordinated program in dietetics builds the supervised practice into the degree instead of leaving you to apply for an internship afterwards. The school owns the rotation: it holds the agreements with the hospitals and agencies, it sets the schedule, and it assigns you to sites. That is the appeal, because you finish the whole route in one admission cycle rather than two. It is also why it cannot be done remotely. No, and nothing accredited does. The difference is who arranges it. An online program delivers the coursework at a distance and expects you to complete supervised practice near where you live, at sites the program approves. What it costs is flexibility and the requirement that you be there. What do dietitians and nutritionists earn?
A national median of $76,400 on 77,570 jobs, per the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release of May 2025, with the middle half between $63,080 and $89,340. That covers SOC 29-1031, and a master's is now the level the credential behind those jobs requires, so this is the figure the degree on this page is actually buying into.
