Kansas aims the Doctor of Clinical Nutrition at people already practicing, not at people starting out. Current RDN licensure and a finished master's are required before you apply. Courses run fully online with a single visit to campus for orientation, and the work centers on medical nutrition therapy, management and leadership, interprofessional collaboration and an outcomes based research project.

Who actually needs a doctorate in nutrition?
Fewer people need one than the existence of the level suggests. A nutrition doctorate is a job requirement, and the jobs that require one are specific: teaching and tenure-track faculty posts, research positions in industry and government laboratories, and senior public health roles where the job is designing studies and interpreting them rather than seeing clients. If the postings you are saving do not list a doctorate under requirements, this level is years and money spent on a qualification nobody is asking you for.
The thing a nutrition doctorate does not do is make you a registered dietitian. The RDN takes a graduate degree, an ACEND-accredited supervised practice pathway, and a passing score on the CDR registration exam. A doctorate satisfies the first of those, exactly as a master’s does, and it does nothing at all about the second or the third. It does not shorten the supervised practice hours, it does not replace them, and it does not put you in front of the exam any sooner.
