What are the CNS certification requirements?

Meet the graduate education requirement
Complete an ACNPE-accredited program, or hold a qualifying master’s or doctoral degree and meet BCNS’s coursework distribution. A master’s or doctorate in nutrition or a related field can qualify. Certain clinical health doctorates form a separate eligible degree route.

Document the required coursework
The non-ACNPE route requires 36 semester credits across graduate nutrition science, biochemistry, physiology, clinical or life sciences, and behavioral science. BCNS reviews the transcript, not the marketing label on the degree.

Complete supervised practice
Nutritionists and health professionals complete 1,000 hours across assessment, intervention and monitoring categories with a BCNS-approved supervisor. New candidates starting hours on or after April 1, 2026 must complete BCNS candidate training before those hours begin.

Pass the CNS examination
The examination contains 200 multiple-choice questions and is offered twice a year. BCNS awards the credential after the applicable education, experience and examination requirements have been approved.

A degree called nutrition can still miss one of these buckets. BCNS reviews official transcripts, and the 12 nutrition-science credits must be graduate level. Biochemistry, physiology, clinical or life sciences, and behavioral science may be graduate or undergraduate work under the current criteria.

The remaining 400 hours may fall into any of those three categories. A BCNS-approved supervisor oversees the work. BCNS allows settings such as internships, clinical practice, institutions and community programs, and excludes retail-store experience.
Supervision can be in person, remote or combined under BCNS rules. But a state can require direct observation or place its own conditions on practice. Candidates are responsible for checking the rules where they live and where they plan to seek licensure.
Since April 1, 2026, a candidate beginning to accrue hours must finish the BCNS supervised-practice candidate training and give the completion certificate to the supervisor first. Someone who began accruing hours before that date falls under the transition BCNS publishes.

BCNS currently lists those three charges for the application and test process. The total excludes your degree, transcript delivery, supervision and any travel. Check the current BCNS application page before you pay because fees and test windows can change.
The exam contains 200 multiple-choice questions and is normally offered twice a year. BCNS asks applicants for official transcripts, two recommendation letters, a resume or CV, and the application materials for their pathway.

An RDN can apply for the CNS through BCNS’s registered-dietitian pathway. BCNS still reviews graduate education and coursework. For practice experience, an RDN documents completion of the dietetic internship, one recent personalized-nutrition case and 75 continuing education credits in personalized nutrition from the prior five years.
Neither set of letters wins everywhere. Read the RDN certification requirements, compare dietitian vs nutritionist, then check the licensing law and job postings for the state and role you actually want.

How should you evaluate an online degree for the CNS?
- Start with your state. Identify the licence and credential your intended work requires.
- Ask BCNS about the degree. Confirm the institution and degree route are eligible before committing tuition.
- Map every transcript bucket. Put the 36-credit distribution beside the actual course list, including prerequisites.
- Find supervision early. Confirm the supervisor, setting, state rules and 2026 candidate-training requirement.
- Price the whole route. Count missing courses, supervision and application costs, not only the advertised degree tuition.
