ACEND pathway type determines whether a program provides coursework only or combines coursework with supervised practice. A Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) provides coursework and a verification statement, while a coordinated program also includes supervised practice. Programs at the same award level can therefore lead to different next steps.

There are 32 verified-online programs in federal dietetics fields, across 26 institutions in 18 states: 23 master’s degrees, 6 bachelor’s degrees, 2 research doctorates, 1 associate’s degree. Those field codes describe subject matter, not accreditation. The award level tells you roughly how long a program takes; ACEND’s directory tells you whether the exact program is accredited and what pathway type it holds.

Median published tuition is $18,748, against $4,500 at the bottom and $46,784 at the top, a gap of $42,284 inside one field. The median admission rate is 82% and the median institutional graduation rate behind these programs is 58%. Dietitians and nutritionists earn a national median of $76,400.

What to know before you choose an online dietetics program

  • The pathway type outranks the award level. DPD, DI, CP, GP and DT are the five things a dietetics program can be accredited as, and each one hands you a different next step.
  • The 32 programs break down as 23 master’s degrees, 6 bachelor’s degrees, 2 research doctorates, 1 associate’s degree, spread over 26 institutions in 18 states.
  • The federal field codes on this page organize programs by subject. They do not establish accreditation or a route to the registration exam.
  • Published tuition runs from $4,500 to$46,784, with a median of $18,748.
  • Admission is wide and completion is not. The median admission rate here is 82%, against a median six-year graduation rate of 58%, which counts every student at the institution rather than dietetics students alone.
  • The occupation pays a median of $76,400 a year, or $36.73 an hour (BLS OEWS, May 2025).

How we ranked online dietetics programs

Every program is scored out of 100 on five factors we can compute for all of them from public reporting: completion rate (30), cost (25), program scale (20), access (15) and public documentation (10). Cost and scale are judged against the other dietetics programs on this page, so a small associate’s program is not measured against a large master’s one. Each card below opens to show its own factor breakdown. Read the full methodology.

The subfield here is dietitian assistant, not dietitian, and that distinction runs through the degree. Purdue Global's online nutrition bachelor's covers metabolism, dietary assessment, counseling and medical nutrition therapy across 33 courses, with an optional holistic nutrition concentration. The school points graduates toward certifications like Certified Dietary Manager and ServSafe Food Manager rather than toward the registration exam for dietitians.

University of North Florida

Integrated Graduate Nutrition Program (M.S.)

Jacksonville, FL

Which master's you pick here changes what you walk out with. The department runs a campus-based dietetic internship master's alongside online options in integrated graduate nutrition, dietetic professional studies and nutrition for healthcare professionals. UNF is direct about the rest of the path too. Becoming a registered dietitian still means supervised practice and passing the national registration exam, and it notes internships are competitive and run six months to two years.

Nutrition & Dietetics - Didactic Program in Dietetics (B.S.)

Jacksonville, FL

Dietetics is the narrow track inside a broad nutrition department. UNF lists community health, foodservice management, public health and sports nutrition among the places graduates land, but the bachelor's counted here is the didactic dietetics degree, taught on campus or fully online at the upper level. UNF is clear the degree alone doesn't register you. An internship follows, running six months to two years, then the national exam.

Marshall University

Dietetics, MS / Dietetics Internship

Huntington, WV

Tuition of $18,748 lands under the midpoint for a master's at this level, and the structure makes that go further. Marshall combines the master's and the dietetic internship into one program set at 36 hours of graduate credit, and the department describes it as a one-year MS/DI. Fewer terms at a lower rate is the whole cost argument here.

Murray State University

Murray State charges $18,540, a little under what a master's at this level normally runs. University of Northern Colorado

Dietetics Master’s

Greeley, CO

Two routes to the finish are on offer. The combined master's and internship takes three years on the traditional pathway, or two on the accelerated one, where rotations start the first summer and a departmental comprehensive exam replaces the capstone project. The institutional six-year graduation rate of 51% falls below the median for this list, and it tracks undergraduates in Greeley rather than distance interns.

Three degrees a year is a very small operation, and that shapes what the online MS in Nutrition feels like from the inside. You won't be one name among a hundred. Adelphi runs the program fully online and aims it at people already working in health or health related jobs, so the rhythm is built around fitting coursework around a job rather than around a campus calendar.

Abilene, TX

Year two is what decides whether you finish. Coursework runs online through the first year in eight-week terms, then the residential internship opens the following August, and the school is blunt that rotations work like a full-time job with homework at night and on some weekends. A 59% institutional six-year rate covers first-time undergraduates in Abilene, not a combined cohort capped at fifteen interns.

The institution behind this degree admits about nine applicants in ten, so King's itself is not where people get filtered out. The master's does its own filtering: a bachelor's first, then anatomy and physiology, organic chemistry and biochemistry at a B or better, a 3.0 GPA, three references and a 1,000-word statement. University of Alaska Anchorage

Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition

Anchorage, AK

This master's confers eleven degrees a year, and the students behind them are scattered across a state where practicum rotations run from Anchorage and Fairbanks out to Bethel, Nome and Utqiagvik. The didactic courses come to you online so the degree reaches students statewide, but supervised experiential learning puts you in a health care setting somewhere in Alaska. Budget travel and housing on top of tuition, because the program says those rotations cost extra.

What do DPD, DI, CP, GP and DT mean?

Those five abbreviations are how ACEND labels what a program is, and they are the vocabulary the whole field runs on. A program page will use them without explaining them, an admissions officer will assume you already know them, and someone who does not know them cannot tell two otherwise identical dietetics programs apart. So here is what each one means.

DPDDidactic Program in Dietetics
Coursework and nothing else. You finish with a verification statement from the program director, which is not a credential and does not let you sit an exam. It is the ticket that lets you apply for supervised practice somewhere else.
DIDietetic Internship
The supervised practice on its own, taken after a DPD. It is a separate application to a separate program on its own timetable, and that second application is where a lot of people stall for a year.
CPCoordinated Program
Coursework and supervised practice built into one accredited program. You do not apply twice. You finish it eligible for the exam, assuming the graduate-degree requirement is also satisfied.
GPGraduate Program, the Future Education Model
ACEND’s graduate model, designed around the rule that took effect in January 2024. Master’s-level coursework and supervised experiential learning run together in one program.
DTDietetic Technician Program
The associate-level pathway. It leads to the NDTR exam rather than the RD exam. That is a real credential with its own scope of practice, and it is a different job from the one an RD does.

Only two of them cover coursework and supervised practice in the same program. A coordinated program and a graduate program each handle both halves under one accreditation. A DPD covers half the requirement and hands you a verification statement to go and find the other half. A dietetic internship is that other half on its own, for people who already hold the verification statement. And the technician pathway sits apart from all four, leading to the NDTR exam instead, which is a separate credential with its own scope of practice.

The pathway type is a fact ACEND holds and publishes. Every accredited program is listed in its directory with the type named against it, so before you apply anywhere, look the program up and read the letters beside its name. ACEND’s directory of accredited programs is the official source for current program status and type. The cards above show federal data on award level, field code, tuition, completion, conferrals and admission rate. Compare those factors here, then verify each program in ACEND’s directory.

One more thing worth separating, because it gets conflated constantly. The federal field code is not the pathway type. IPEDS sorts these programs into 5 codes inside the dietetics family, and those codes describe the subject matter, not the accreditation. Both taxonomies are useful and neither substitutes for the other.

Can you do the supervised practice hours online?

No, and this is the part the phrase “fully online” quietly hides. Every program on this page says on its own page that it delivers the coursework at a distance, and that describes the classroom. Supervised practice in an ACEND pathway puts you in a clinical unit, a community agency, a school district’s kitchen or a hospital food service operation, in person, on a rota, for the hours the standards require. None of that happens through a browser and none of it was ever meant to.

That is why the pathway type changes what “online” means for you. A fully-online DPD really is fully online, because a DPD has no practice component to move. A coordinated program or a graduate program advertised as online is describing its coursework, and you will be driving to placements. If you chose an online program because you have a job or a family that keeps you where you are, that difference is not a technicality. It is the whole plan.

So ask one question on the call with admissions: does the program place you with preceptors, or do you find your own? The answer varies by program, it is rarely on the web page, and for a distance student it decides whether the supervised practice is an administrative step or a scramble to find willing preceptors in a town where you know nobody in the field. What ACEND accreditation actually covers goes through the standards behind that in more detail.

How much do registered dietitians get paid?

Half of dietitians and nutritionists earn more than $76,400 a year and half earn less, which works out at $36.73 an hour at the midpoint. The middle half of the occupation sits between $63,080 and $89,340. Below that, the tenth percentile earns $49,090. Above it, the ninetieth clears $103,720. That is a spread of $54,630 from one end of the occupation to the other. The figures come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release of May 2025, covering 77,570 jobs under SOC 29-1031.

A median is a midpoint, not an offer, and these are numbers for the occupation rather than for graduates of any program on this page. Dietitian pay broken out by state shows where that midpoint moves most, and how to become an RDN walks the pathway end to end.

Other ways to compare online dietetics programs

Questions about online dietetics programs

What is the difference between a DPD and a coordinated program?

A DPD is coursework only. You leave it with a verification statement and then apply separately to a dietetic internship for the supervised practice. A coordinated program builds the supervised practice into the degree, so you go through one admissions process instead of two and come out the other side without a second wait. Two programs on this page can carry the same award and the same price and be one of each.

Can you complete dietetics supervised practice hours online?

No. When any of these 32 programs is described as online, that describes the classroom and nothing else. Supervised practice in an ACEND pathway happens in person, at approved sites, on a rota: clinical units, community agencies, school and hospital food service. So a fully-online DPD genuinely is fully online, because a DPD has no practice component to move. A coordinated program or a graduate program advertised the same way will still have you driving to placements.

How do you check which ACEND pathway a program is accredited as?

Look the program up in ACEND’s directory of accredited programs and read the pathway type listed against it. Every accredited program is in there with its type named. It takes two minutes, it is the fact that decides what the degree does for you, and it is the one thing you should confirm before you pay a deposit.

What is the difference between an RD and an NDTR?

The RD, also written RDN, comes from a bachelor’s-or-higher pathway plus a graduate degree, supervised practice and the CDR registration exam. The NDTR comes from the associate-level dietetic technician pathway and its own exam. Both are registered credentials issued by the CDR, and they have different scopes of practice and different jobs behind them. One is not a lesser version of the other.

How much do online dietetics programs cost?

The midpoint sits at $18,748, with $4,500 at one end of the track and $46,784 at the other. Budget the out-of-state rate rather than the in-state one, because that is what distance students are usually billed. Then add what the tuition line leaves out: supervised practice means travel to placement sites and months on a rota when you are working for the experience rather than for money, and a DPD graduate pays for the internship as a second enrolment on top of the degree.

Do you still need a master’s degree if you take a coordinated program?

Yes. The graduate-degree rule the Commission on Dietetic Registration brought in for January 2024 runs alongside the pathway requirement rather than replacing it, so the two have to be satisfied separately. A bachelor’s-level coordinated program can hand you the coursework and the supervised practice and still leave you a graduate degree short of sitting the exam. A graduate program in the Future Education Model settles both at once, which is what it was designed for.

What do dietitians earn?

Half the occupation earns more than $76,400 a year and half earns less, which is $36.73 an hour at the midpoint. Quarter to quarter, the middle band runs $63,080 to $89,340. The bottom tenth takes $49,090 and the top tenth clears $103,720. Those figures cover 77,570 jobs under SOC 29-1031 in the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release of May 2025.
