RDN certification requirements are set by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and they come in four parts: a graduate degree, the required coursework, supervised practice, and a pass on CDR’s registration examination for dietitians. All four requirements must be completed.

Federal subject codes do not establish ACEND accreditation or exam eligibility. Check the exact program and pathway type in ACEND’s directory before enrolling.

This page covers the credential itself: what it is, who issues it, what you have to do to earn it, and what keeps it active afterwards. Fees, continuing education totals and the exam specifications belong to CDR and CDR revises them, so take those numbers from CDR in writing before you build a budget or a timeline on them.

Check these two things yourself

Confirm the current fee schedule, continuing education requirement and exam specifications with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Confirm that the specific program you are considering currently holds ACEND accreditation, in ACEND’s own directory. Accreditation status changes, and a program’s marketing page is not the record of it.

The credential

What is the RDN credential, and who issues it?

RDN stands for registered dietitian nutritionist. It is a national credential, and it is awarded by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing arm of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Two organizations have different roles in this system. CDR registers people. It writes the eligibility rules, owns the exam, and decides whether you may put RDN after your name. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, ACEND, accredits programs. It decides which degrees and which internships count as the education behind the credential. Both are part of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Use ACEND to verify a program and CDR to verify credential requirements and registration.

The letters are CDR’s property, not a description you get to adopt. In most states anyone may call themselves a nutritionist. Registered dietitian nutritionist is a credential you hold or do not hold, and that difference is why the requirements below are enforced as tightly as they are.

The four parts

What are the RDN certification requirements?

In the order CDR expects them. The first three are education, the fourth is the exam, and a state licence comes after all four.

  1. Requirement 1

    A graduate degree

Since 1 January 2024, CDR has required a minimum of a graduate degree to be eligible to take the registration examination. Before that date a bachelor’s was enough, and it no longer is.

  2. Requirement 2

The required coursework, from an ACEND-accredited program

The didactic content has to come from a program ACEND accredits. Nutrition coursework from a program without that accreditation does not substitute for it, however closely the syllabus matches.

  3. Requirement 3

Supervised practice, from an ACEND-accredited program

Supervised practice is completed in person at approved sites before exam eligibility, regardless of whether coursework is delivered online.

  4. Requirement 4

A pass on the CDR registration examination for dietitians

After your program confirms completion of the education and supervised practice requirements, CDR authorizes you to test through its testing vendor.

The piece people underestimate is the verification statement. When you complete an ACEND-accredited program, that program issues the document confirming it, and the document is what proves the education requirement to CDR. Coursework and supervised practice obtained outside an accredited program produce no verification statement, so they produce no eligibility either.

The January 2024 change

Do you need a master’s degree to become an RDN?

Yes, if you are starting now. The graduate degree requirement took effect on 1 January 2024. It governs eligibility to sit the registration exam, which is why it did not reach backwards: someone who passed the exam in 2019 with a bachelor’s is still an RDN and stays one.

For everyone still on the way in, the bachelor’s stopped being the finish line and became one possible step. Among the 32programs reported in federal dietetics fields here, 25are at graduate level and 6 are bachelor’s programs. Those counts describe level, not accreditation or exam eligibility.

Whether a graduate degree in a subject other than nutrition satisfies the rule is a question about your specific transcript, and CDR is the only body whose answer counts. Ask CDR, get the answer in writing, and do not assume an existing master’s clears the requirement until you have it. The online nutrition master’s rankings compare public outcomes and cost; ACEND’s directory verifies the pathway.

ACEND pathway types

Which ACEND pathway gives you the supervised practice hours?

ACEND accredits several kinds of program and the difference between them is what each one supplies. Read a program’s type before you read anything else about it, because the type tells you what you will still be missing on the day you graduate.

Coursework only

DPD, the Didactic Program in Dietetics

Provides the required classroom content and a verification statement. Supervised practice must be completed through a separate eligible program.

Supervised practice only

DI, the Dietetic Internship

The supervised practice half on its own, entered after a DPD. Some internships are paired with a graduate degree and some are not, and that pairing decides whether you still owe CDR a degree afterwards.

Coursework and supervised practice

CP, the Coordinated Program

Both halves inside one accredited program. You graduate with the classroom content and the supervised practice already done, which means no separate internship application.

Both, at graduate level

GP, the Graduate Program

ACEND’s Future Education Model graduate program. Coursework and supervised practice together at graduate level, which is the shape the 2024 degree rule pushed the field toward.

A DPD leaves you needing a separate internship place, internship places are applied for through a match, and applicants who do not place have to go again in a later round. A coordinated program or eligible graduate program includes supervised practice after program admission.

So ask two questions of any program you are considering. How do your students obtain supervised practice, and does the program currently hold ACEND accreditation. The first answer comes from the program. The second comes from ACEND’s directory, because accreditation status changes and only the directory is the record.

The registration examination

What is on the RDN exam?

CDR’s registration examination for dietitians is computer-based and adaptive, so the difficulty of the questions moves with your answers. The content outline groups it into four domains.

Principles of dietetics

Food science and nutrient science, research literacy, education and counselling technique, and the professional standards underneath all of it.

Nutrition care for individuals and groups

The nutrition care process end to end: assessment, diagnosis, intervention, then monitoring and evaluation, across the lifespan and across disease states.

Management of food and nutrition programs and services

Running the service rather than treating the patient. Staffing, budgets, quality management and program planning.

Foodservice systems

Procurement, production, sanitation and food safety, equipment and facility planning.

CDR publishes the test specifications, including how the questions are distributed across those four domains, and revises them after each practice audit. Read the specifications in force for your own test date rather than a version somebody posted on a forum, and take the pass standard and the fee from CDR directly. The domains are stable. The numbers attached to them are not.

Recertification

How do you keep the RDN credential after you pass?

Passing is not the end of the RDN certification requirements. CDR issues the credential against a recertification cycle of five years, and keeping it means completing continuing professional education inside every cycle.

The mechanism is the Professional Development Portfolio. You assess your own learning needs against CDR’s competency framework, write a learning plan, log the continuing professional education units you earn against that plan, and report the outcome at the end of the cycle. There is an ethics component and an annual maintenance fee as well. Every one of those totals and charges is set by CDR and changes over time, so read them off CDR’s own site rather than this page or any other.

The consequence of letting it lapse is worth saying plainly. The letters belong to CDR, and you hold them on condition. Stop meeting the requirement and you stop being an RDN, and in states whose licensure law points at CDR registration, the state licence goes with it.

RDN vs RD

Is an RDN the same thing as an RD?

Yes. Registered dietitian and registered dietitian nutritionist are the same credential, with the same exam and the same requirements behind them. CDR made the nutritionist form optional so the letters would say out loud what registered dietitians already are, and every registered dietitian may use either version.

So RDN is not a senior grade of RD. There is no extra exam between them, no extra coursework, and no seniority. An employer advertising for an RD and an employer advertising for an RDN are asking for the same person, and where you see both forms inside one document it is a style choice rather than a distinction.

State law

Do you still need a state license to work as a dietitian?

Usually, and it is a separate process from the national credential. CDR is a private credentialing body. A licence is state law, granted by a state board, and it is the thing that gives you the legal right to practise in that state.

Most states regulate dietetics in some form, and what they regulate differs. Some license the practice, some certify practitioners, some protect only the title. Many state statutes name the CDR credential as the qualifying route, which is why the RDN usually works as the on-ramp to a licence rather than a replacement for one.

Two things follow for anyone choosing an online program. Your state board decides whether your education satisfies its rules, not the school, so ask the board in the state where you intend to practise before you enrol rather than after. And if you move later, you deal with the new state’s board again, because the licence does not travel with you even though the RDN does.

Online programs for the RDN pathway

How do you find online programs for the RDN route?

Start with the 32 programs reported in federal dietetics fields, then verify every exact program in ACEND’s directory. The federal classification narrows a search; it does not establish accreditation or exam eligibility.

Master’s degrees
23
Bachelor’s degrees
6
Doctorates

The federal classification identifies a program’s subject area. It does not establish current ACEND accreditation or RDN exam eligibility. Check the specific program in ACEND’s directory before you pay a deposit. The dietetics ranking compares programs reported in those federal subject fields, and the methodology shows how each factor is weighted.

The federal dietetics family also includes 1 program under the dietetic-technician code. It points to the separate NDTR credential and does not satisfy the RDN graduate-degree rule.

The dietetic technician route leads to the separate NDTR credential, which has its own education requirements and exam. The NDTR requirements cover it, and the associate-level ranking lists the programs that sit there.

The RDN certification requirements are identical whether the classroom half happens online or on campus. Delivery mode changes where you sit, not what CDR asks of you.

RDN careers and salary

What can you do with an RDN, and what does it pay?

Dietitians and nutritionists earn a national median of $76,400 across 77,570 jobs, in the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release of May 2025. The middle half of the occupation earns between $63,080 and $89,340, and the published spread runs from $49,090 at the tenth percentile to $103,720 at the ninetieth. Those are figures for the occupation, not a promise attached to the credential.

Dietitian pay broken out by state shows where in the country that median moves most, and how to become a registered dietitian nutritionist covers education, supervised practice, the CDR exam, licensure and common work settings.

Questions about RDN certification requirements

What are the RDN certification requirements in 2026?

Four things, all set by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. A graduate degree, the required coursework through an ACEND-accredited program, supervised practice through an ACEND-accredited program, and a pass on CDR’s registration examination for dietitians. Your program issues a verification statement confirming the education and the supervised practice, and that document is what makes you eligible to test. State licensure is a separate process that comes after.

Do you need a master’s degree to sit the RDN exam?

Yes. Since 1 January 2024 the Commission on Dietetic Registration has required a minimum of a graduate degree to be eligible to take the registration examination for dietitians. The rule governs eligibility to test, so it did not strip the credential from dietitians who registered earlier with a bachelor’s. Whether a graduate degree in a subject other than nutrition satisfies the rule is a question about your specific transcript, and CDR is the only body whose answer counts.

Is an RDN the same as an RD?

Yes. Registered dietitian and registered dietitian nutritionist are two accepted spellings of one credential, with the same exam and the same requirements behind them. CDR made the nutritionist form optional, so every registered dietitian may use either. RDN is not a senior grade of RD, and a job posting asking for one is asking for the other.

How often do you have to recertify as an RDN?

CDR runs recertification on a five-year cycle, tracked through the Professional Development Portfolio. You assess your learning needs against CDR’s competency framework, write a learning plan, log continuing professional education against it, and report at the end of the cycle. The unit totals, the ethics component and the maintenance fee are published by CDR and revised by CDR, so confirm the current ones there before you plan around them.

Can you complete the RDN requirements online?

The coursework can often be online. Supervised practice is completed in person at approved sites. Do not infer eligibility from an online label or federal field code: verify the exact program and pathway in ACEND’s directory.

Does the RDN let you practise in every state?

No. The RDN is a national credential from a private credentialing body, and the right to practise is granted by a state board under state law. Most states regulate dietetics in some form, and many name the CDR credential as the qualifying route, which makes the RDN the on-ramp to a licence rather than a substitute for one. Ask the board in the state where you intend to practise what it requires, and ask before you enrol.
