Two accredited routes
DPD or Coordinated Program: Which Route to the RDN

Side by side
What is the difference between a DPD and a coordinated program?
| Compared on | DPD, the didactic program | CP, the coordinated program |
|---|---|---|
| What the program supplies | Coursework. The didactic content ACEND requires, taught as classes, and nothing beyond it. | Coursework and supervised practice, scheduled inside one program by one faculty. |
| What you hold on graduation day | A verification statement for the coursework. It confirms the classroom half of the requirement. | A verification statement covering both the coursework and the supervised practice. |
| The next thing you do | Apply to a dietetic internship. It is a separate program with its own application, its own admission decision and its own cost. | Apply to CDR to sit the registration examination for dietitians. |
| Where the competition sits | After the degree, at the internship match, when the tuition is already spent. | At admission, before you enroll. The competition does not disappear, it moves earlier. |
| Who arranges the practice sites | The internship you place with, once you place. | The program, through the hospitals, clinics, foodservice operations and agencies it holds agreements with. |
| Where you end up living | Open. You can apply to internships anywhere in the country, which is the flexibility this route buys. | Decided when you enroll, because the practice happens at that program’s affiliated sites. |
| If you do not place the first time | You apply again in a later round, holding the verification statement you already earned. | Supervised practice is included, so there is no separate internship application. |
| The 2024 graduate degree rule | A bachelor’s-level DPD leaves you owing CDR a graduate degree as well as the supervised practice. | A graduate-level coordinated program can satisfy the degree, the coursework and the practice together. |
A DPD provides accredited coursework and a verification statement for that coursework. A coordinated program includes both coursework and supervised practice and verifies both requirements.
A DPD graduate must still complete supervised practice through a separate accredited pathway. A coordinated-program graduate has already completed supervised practice and, after meeting the graduate-degree rule, can proceed toward the CDR exam.
Both are ACEND pathway types, and ACEND accredits several others. The full set of pathway types covers what each one supplies, and the RDN requirements lay out the four things CDR asks for and the order they come in.
Coursework, and a document
What is a Didactic Program in Dietetics?
DPD stands for Didactic Program in Dietetics, and didactic is the term for the accredited coursework component of the RDN pathway. It does not include supervised practice.
What it is
An accredited coursework program
A Didactic Program in Dietetics teaches ACEND’s required knowledge content inside a degree, usually a bachelor’s. You take the food science, the medical nutrition therapy, the biochemistry, the counseling and the management coursework, and you are examined on them the way you are examined on any course.
What it gives you
A coursework verification statement
After completion, the program director issues a verification statement for the coursework. The statement does not establish exam eligibility by itself because CDR also requires supervised practice and a graduate degree.
What comes next
A second application, to a second program
You apply to a dietetic internship, which is its own accredited program with its own admission. Some internships come paired with a graduate degree and some do not, and that pairing decides whether you still owe CDR a degree after you finish.
None of that makes a DPD a lesser program. The coursework is the same content a coordinated program teaches, the accreditation is the same accreditation, and a DPD graduate who places in a strong internship is in a very good position. The DPD is also the route that leaves you free: you apply to internships across the country rather than accepting the sites one program happens to hold agreements with.
A DPD verification statement confirms coursework only. CDR exam eligibility also requires a graduate degree and completion of supervised practice through an eligible pathway.
Coursework and practice, one enrollment
What is a coordinated program in dietetics?
A coordinated program is the pathway type that carries both halves. The word coordinated describes what the program does with your rotations: it coordinates them, at sites it has agreements with, on a schedule it controls, alongside the coursework.
What it is
One program, both halves
A coordinated program is accredited to deliver the coursework and the supervised practice together. The rotations are on your schedule the way classes are, they are graded, and the faculty who taught you the coursework are the people who signed the site agreements.
What it gives you
Coursework and practice verification
The program verifies both the required coursework and supervised practice. If you also meet the graduate-degree requirement, the remaining national credentialing step is the CDR exam.
Program constraints
Seats, location and scheduling
Enrollment can be limited by the number of available practice sites. Rotations take place with program partners and may offer less flexibility in location and scheduling than a separate internship search.
Before enrolling, ask which sites students rotate through and how far they are from campus. Compare those locations and schedules with your work, transportation and relocation constraints.
A coordinated program can be less flexible. Because practice is built into the enrollment schedule, pausing for a family emergency or changing cities may be more difficult than it would be between a DPD and an internship you have not applied to yet.
Dietetic internship matching
What happens if you do not match to a dietetic internship?
Applicants who do not obtain an internship placement can apply again in a later round. The delay can extend the timeline to exam eligibility and may add living, application or education costs.
This placement risk applies to the DPD route because supervised practice is a separate admission step. A coordinated program includes supervised practice after admission, although entry to the coordinated program itself may be competitive.
If you are on the DPD route, prepare for the internship application throughout the degree. Volunteer and work in food and nutrition settings from the first year, keep the grades a competitive applicant has, get to know the faculty who will write for you, and ask your DPD director where their graduates have placed and what those applications looked like. Every one of those is easier to build across a whole degree than in the last semester of one.
Ask the program this, in writing
How do your students obtain supervised practice, and does the program currently hold ACEND accreditation for the pathway type it advertises? The first answer comes from the program. The second comes from ACEND’s own directory, because accreditation status changes and the directory is the record that settles it.
Future Education Model graduate programs
What is ACEND’s Future Education Model graduate program?
ACEND accredits a graduate pathway under its Future Education Model standards, and it works the way a coordinated program works: coursework and supervised practice inside one program, one verification statement covering both. The difference is where it sits. This one is graduate level by design, which lines it up with the rule CDR put in place on 1 January 2024 requiring a graduate degree before you may sit the registration examination.
This can be an integrated option for a student who already holds a bachelor’s degree. Coursework, a graduate degree and supervised practice can be completed through one program. It can also serve career changers whose undergraduate degree was in something unrelated, though those programs set expectations about prerequisite coursework and the expectations differ, so ask before you apply rather than after.
You will see both models while you search, because ACEND accredits Future Education Model programs alongside the older pathway types. A program’s marketing page will not always make the distinction clear, so read the pathway type rather than the degree name. The master’s ranking shows which graduate programs this site indexes and what each one costs.
Online coursework and in-person rotations
Can you complete a DPD or coordinated program online?
Food science, medical nutrition therapy, biochemistry, counseling technique and foodservice management are all taught online by real programs, and a DPD delivered that way is a DPD. Supervised practice is completed in person in a hospital, a dialysis unit, a school district kitchen, a WIC clinic or a long-term care facility, with a preceptor standing there, and no version of that is remote.
So an online coordinated program is making a specific promise: the classes come to you, and the program still arranges rotations at sites near where you live. That arrangement is worth interrogating before you enroll. Ask who finds the site, who signs the agreement, what happens when a site withdraws mid-rotation, and how far students in your region have had to travel. A program that answers those quickly has done it before.
Some programs require students to find their own preceptors and obtain site approval. Ask whether the program secures placements, provides leads or makes the student responsible for finding sites.
Choosing an ACEND pathway
Should you choose a DPD or a coordinated program?
Compare each route by placement structure, location, scheduling, admission risk, graduate-degree requirements and career goal.
Choose a coordinated program for an integrated placement
A coordinated program includes supervised practice after admission, removing the need for a separate internship application. It can be a good fit if you can attend the assigned practice sites and follow the program’s schedule.
Choose a DPD if you cannot move, or you are already enrolled
A DPD can offer more geographic flexibility because students apply to internships separately. Plan for a competitive internship application and build relevant experience, grades and faculty references throughout the degree.
Choose a Future Education Model graduate program if you already hold a bachelor’s
If your undergraduate degree is done, whether in nutrition or in something else entirely, a graduate program that carries coursework and supervised practice together answers the 2024 degree rule and the practice requirement in one enrollment. Check what undergraduate coursework it expects before you apply, because that varies by program.
Choose neither if the goal was never clinical
Choose an RDN route for clinical roles involving patients, medical records and care teams. Community nutrition, food policy, industry and research roles may not require the RDN, so verify job requirements before paying for supervised clinical training.
There is a fifth situation worth naming. If the clinical work appeals but the graduate degree does not, CDR issues a technician-level credential with its own accredited programs and its own exam, and it gets you into paid nutrition work at the associate level. The NDTR requirements cover what that route asks for, and dietitian versus nutritionist explains which titles are protected and which are not, which is the question underneath most of this.
Verify online RDN pathways
How do you verify an online RDN pathway?
Use federal subject fields to narrow the 62verified-online programs, then check the exact degree in ACEND’s directory. A federal subject classification does not establish ACEND accreditation or exam eligibility.
- Programs indexed
- 62
- Dietetics field
- 32
- Master’s degrees
- 45
- Median pay, the occupation
- $76,400
The dietetics ranking scores all 32 programs in that subject family on cost, completion and scale, and each card links to the school’s own page, which may state the pathway type. The dataset includes45 master’s programs among the 62 programs indexed here award a master’s. Their subject classifications do not prove pathway type, so confirm each finalist in ACEND’s directory.
The nutrition science ranking is a different subject family, with 11 programs commonly aimed at research, public health, industry and doctoral study. Federal classification alone still cannot settle CDR eligibility for a specific program.
Read those counts for what they are. They come from federal classification codes, which place a program in a subject family and say nothing about whether a particular school holds ACEND accreditation today or which pathway type the accreditation covers. Both of those answers live in ACEND’s directory, and on this question they are the two that matter, so look them up there before you send anybody a deposit. The methodology lists every field this site scores on and the source each one is pulled from.
Same credential, same pay data
What do dietitians earn after either route?
The pathway does not follow you into the salary. Employers hire on the credential, and federal wage reporting counts one occupation, SOC 29-1031, Dietitians and Nutritionists. The national median sits at $76,400 across 77,570 jobs in the May 2025 release, the middle half of the occupation earns between $63,080 and $89,340, and the published spread runs from $49,090 at the tenth percentile to $103,720 at the ninetieth.
A median is a midpoint rather than an offer, and what the route changes is the calendar and the risk rather than the number at the end. Dietitian pay broken out by state shows where that median moves most, and how to become a registered dietitian nutritionist walks the whole route from first enrollment to first job.
Questions about DPD and coordinated programs
What is the difference between a DPD and a coordinated program?
A Didactic Program in Dietetics supplies the required coursework and stops there, and a coordinated program supplies the coursework and the supervised practice together. The difference shows up on graduation day. A DPD graduate holds a verification statement for the coursework and still has to win a place in a dietetic internship before CDR will let them test. A coordinated program graduate holds a verification statement covering both requirements and applies straight to the exam. Both are ACEND pathway types and both lead to the same credential.
Do you still need a dietetic internship after a coordinated program?
No. The supervised practice is inside the coordinated program, which is the reason the pathway type exists. You complete the rotations as part of the degree, the program verifies them, and there is no separate internship application to make and no separate admission to win.
Is a coordinated program better than a DPD?
A coordinated program includes supervised practice after admission, while a DPD graduate must apply separately to an internship. This removes a later placement step but can reduce flexibility because coordinated programs may have fewer seats and rotations occur at partner sites on a fixed schedule.
What is the Future Education Model graduate program?
It is ACEND’s newer pathway type, accredited to deliver graduate coursework and supervised practice inside one program. Structurally it works the way a coordinated program does, with both requirements met in a single enrollment, and it sits at graduate level, which matches the rule CDR put in place on 1 January 2024 requiring a graduate degree for exam eligibility. ACEND accredits Future Education Model programs alongside the older pathway types, so you will see both while you are searching.
Can you complete a DPD or a coordinated program online?
The coursework, in many cases. The supervised practice, no. Rotations happen in person at hospitals, clinics, foodservice operations and community agencies, so a program advertised as online is describing its classroom component and arranging or expecting practice sites in the physical world. Ask any online program the same question before you enroll: how do your students obtain supervised practice, and does the program arrange the placements or leave you to find them.
Does a DPD verification statement make you a registered dietitian?
No, and this is the misunderstanding that costs people the most. A DPD verification statement confirms you completed the required coursework. CDR asks for four things before it issues the credential: a graduate degree, the coursework, supervised practice through an ACEND-accredited program, and a pass on the registration examination for dietitians. A DPD covers one of the four. Everything after it is a separate program, a separate application and a separate document.
How much do dietitians earn after either route?
The route you take does not appear in the pay data, because employers hire on the credential rather than on the pathway that produced it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a national median of $76,400 for SOC 29-1031, Dietitians and Nutritionists, across 77,570 jobs in the May 2025 release, with the middle half earning between $63,080 and $89,340. What the route changes is how long you spend getting there and how much risk you carry on the way.
